A new journey...

About six years ago J and I were on our way back from the great white north, when J got really sick. It only lasted during the night (which was good because we had many hours of travel the next day, and its better for both of us if he drives ) We blamed it on a bad steak at a restaurant, and went on from there. Well about a year later it happened again, and then another year again. Then a little more often until finally now it has happened 3 times in 4 mos. Our kids have nicknamed it "daddy's fire belly". For a long time we thought it was heartburn. But when we couldn't make sense of it with the foods he was eating, I looked into it a little deeper. The symptoms don't line up at all with heartburn, or really gull bladder issues or an ulcer. So now what? Something was obviously up.

Long story short: J was tested by a LNMT and was discovered to have a wheat allergy. Now we don't know if it is a wheat allergy, gluten intolerance or celiac. But it is something. After talking with some friends who have celiac we have decided for now, that our best course of action is to do a gluten free trial run. At this point we won't go see a doctor about it, because the treatment is diet management alone. Which we (theoretically) can handle on our own.

After a couple weeks of discussing J and I have decided to go Gluten Free for 4-6 weeks. After that time frame we will re-introduce gluten foods gradually, starting with oats, then barley, then rye then wheat. Hoping to make the determination as to if it is a gluten thing or a wheat thing.

I ate my last cookies tonight. If he has to I will with him, its only fair. On the plus side, his favorite snack chip is GF, so tonight we indulged and felt a little sorry for ourselves. Its going to be a HARD adjustment. (He manages a pizza place for crying out loud!) but if we can just make it through 4 weeks, we got this!

I'm starting this blog as a way to document our journey from a very bread loving, fried food loving, sweet-a-holic family. To one that ... well... isn't.
